Four Tools, One Clear Picture: A Practical Guide to Bilingual Assessments

Selecting assessments for an emergent bilingual student should begin with the referral question—not a standard battery. This practical session explains how evaluators can use the WJ V, WJ V Nonverbal, WMLS-III, and Batería IV to answer specific questions within a comprehensive bilingual evaluation.

Participants will review what each assessment includes, which questions it can help answer, and what to consider when choosing English, Spanish, or reduced-language measures. The session also demonstrates how to combine test results with language history, educational experience, intervention data, observations, and other sources to reach clear, well-supported conclusions.

Roxana Stanley, M.Ed., is a bilingual educational diagnostician, national speaker, and founder of The Bilingual Diag, LLC. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and her master’s degree in Special Education from Midwestern State University. With more than a decade of experience evaluating emergent bilingual students, Roxana specializes in helping professionals distinguish language differences from disabilities through practical, research-based assessment practices. As a former emergent bilingual student herself, she brings both professional expertise and lived experience to her work. This perspective strengthens her commitment to evaluations that are equitable, culturally responsive, and informed by each student’s language and educational history.
